Santa Fe College is now home to five athletic programs including baseball, fast pitch softball, men’s & women’s basketball, and it’s newest program; women’s volleyball.
As one of the most popular sports in the state of Florida, women’s volleyball has been desired at Santa Fe College for quite some time.
The Saints named it’s head coach in December of 2013, Nick Cheronis. Serving as the associate head coach at the University of Florida for 18 years, Cheronis has plenty of guidance in starting a program from the ground-up. Cheronis said that Florida’s head coach Mary Wise has helped tremendously.
The first tryouts for Santa Fe’s volleyball team took place on Wednesday, January 22nd. The high amount of participants prompted Cheronis to hold a second tryout the following Wednesday.
Cheronis says “I was quite surprised at the amount of talent they showed.”
Being able to build a volleyball program from the ground-up is “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Cheronis.
The recruiting and scouting process for the Saints has already begun and the roster is anticipated to be released during the spring.
